The newly inaugurated integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to make a significant impact on the connectivity and tourism of the island union territory. Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 710 crore, the terminal boasts a total built-up area of around 40,800 square meters. It has been a long-standing demand from the people of Andaman and Nicobar that Veer Savarkar Airport’s capacity be increased along with the number of visitors from the country.
The present terminal’s daily capacity for handling tourists is 4,000 individuals. However, with the operationalization of the new integrated terminal, the capacity will be increased to 11,000 tourists per day. Furthermore, an Apron capable of accommodating two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft has been constructed at a cost of Rs 80 crore, making it possible for the airport to park up to ten aircraft simultaneously.
The architectural design of the airport terminal draws inspiration from nature, resembling a shell-shaped structure that represents the sea and islands. The new integrated terminal building will boost air traffic and help enhance tourism in the region, official sources said.
Additionally, it will help improve employment prospects for the neighborhood and boost the local economy.
